Here is a very small addition to a row house in Jersey City, NJ. Above this crawlspace is a small bathroom that suffered from frozen pipes in the winter, and massive temperature differences from the main house.

These pictures are from a recent project with air sealing and insulation in a split level home in Madison NJ

This attic had some storage area, and some clever “air sealing” with a cardboard box stapled to the kneewall. This attic also had lots of unsealed recessed lights, walls that were not sealed at top, and a large drop soffit that was open to the bathroom below.

After Air sealing the top plates of the walls, and the kneewall, we used blown in cellulose insulation. When checking the garage ceiling, we noticed very little insulation in the cavity. We then dense packed the garage ceiling with cellulose.

Welcome to our first Wednesday Project Pictures post (whew, that’s a tongue twister)! We will be showing pictures from current and past projects, with details for each photo.

This project is an addition on a home with a walk out basement. The client complained of a cold and drafts that made the room uncomfortable for her children. Opening the walls, we see the problem: No Insulation with Concrete block on the other side!

As we started to fill the walls with dense packed cellulose, we noticed quite a bit of air and material moving from one bay to the other. As you can see, we pre-cut quite a few holes, which then needed to be temporarily sealed back up to properly dense pack the material.

After filling the walls with cellulose, we then sealed the holes and painted the wall with two coats of matching paint. The final product looked like new, and most importantly, was comfortable, warm, and will help to save money on energy bills!

Boy, it sure is cold outside this week here in NJ! With temperature hovering in the mid 20s over the next week, AccuGreen Home Performance wants to remind you to check your attic insulation for appropriate levels. In NJ, fiberglass insulation should be at least 10 inches thick.

This home in West Orange, NJ suffered from a very cold, dry, and uncomfortable second floor. Looking into the attic, it wasn’t hard to see why: Very little, uneven insulation,  and lots of air leakage through gaps and cracks was making this home very uncomfortable. Some sections of the attic were even missing insulation!

To make this home more comfortable and energy efficient, our first step was to Air Seal (or Weatherize) any gaps and cracks in the attic. At AccuGreen Home Performance, we always use a low expansion foam sealant that is an approved Type V residential fire-block penetration sealant for fire code application. This foam prevents air moving from the living space into the attic, and vice versa.

Next, we enclosed the fiberglass on the walls behind 2 inch polyisocynurate foam board, and air sealed the gaps. This adds insulation to the complete wall assembly (including the wall studs) and also air seals the entire wall. This is a great way to insulate knee walls and any interior wall that is up against an exterior space.

Finally, we added 9 inches of blown in cellulose insulation. The cellulose helps the fiberglass work better by reducing air flow, and because of its fluffy loose nature, it fills in all the little gaps and cracks around the fiberglass. At AccuGreen Home Performance, we always add insulation over the joists, to prevent thermal bridging. As you can see below, the final product covers all the fiberglass, and provides a substantial increase in insulating power of the attic.
