Photos from the Field: Before and After Insulation

May 29, 2012

Here is a home in West Orange, NJ that is well over one hundred years old. This home had very little insulation in the attic, and no air sealing. The old blown in fiberglass insulation was crushed down to about 4 inches, and had a very low R value. The rooms below the attic were cold and drafty in the winter, and hot and stuffy in the summer.

After the attic was cleaned of debris and trash, AccuGreen Home Performance performed air sealing on all attic gaps, cracks, and penetrations. Then this attic received 14 inches of blown in cellulose over the existing fiberglass.. The 14 inches of cellulose brought the R value of this attic up to R-60, the BPI recommended insulation value for Northern New Jersey. Air Sealing, combined with this additional insulation, makes this home more comfortable and more energy efficient.
